NEW V I D E O
IRCAM | Anna ARKUSHYNA| Viktoriia VITRENKO | September, 14th 2023 | Paris
IRCAM: Although I've already worked with the voice, this piece for the Cursus is the first vocal piece in which you've based your work on a text.
Anna Arkushyna: Until now, I've used the voice more as a musical instrument, giving it more abstract and purely sonic functions. Now I'm moving into new territory, because I want to integrate textual elements and elements linked to the semantics of the text (in this case a poetic text) into the sound framework. This is a very strong constraint for me as a composer, because it actually represents pre-composed material: integrating and developing it in a way that is consistent with my musical universe is a real challenge.
IRCAM:Which poem have you chosen?
Anna Arkushyna: It's Contra Spem Spero by Lessia Ukrainka, a Ukrainian author I've loved since childhood - so it's a text I know intimately and feel very close to. Its title, which in Latin means "I hope without hope", serves as the foundation for the play. And I'm entrusting its creation to a singer, also Ukrainian, Viktoriia Vitrenko, who now lives in Germany.
IRCAM:How does the computer music interact with and/or enhance the voice?
Anna Arkushyna: The electronic discourse is both interactive and pre-composed. The voice triggers a variety of samples that I've composed - I'd even go so far as to say a 'cloud' of samples, which are like clones and shadows of the singer's voice. I also decided to add to the electronics the 'noise' of the writing, as a symbolic sound implementation of the text. These are very discreet noises - like a pen tip scratching a surface, for example. They are so soft and fragile that I had to record them in the absolute silence of Ircam's anechoic chamber. So even if you can't hear the words, the written word and writing are always omnipresent.

Svyatoslav LUNYOV | Viktoriia VITRENKO | Antonii BARYSHEVSKYI | December, 16th 2023 | Amsterdam
BY DE NIEUWE MUZE | 30 DECEMBER 2023
“…A musical work that was also unexpectedly good to listen to was Fierce January 2023 - A Ukrainian Diary. It is a song cycle consisting of 20th- and 21st-century poems by Ukrainian poets. These were set to music by composer Svyatoslav Lunyov, also from Ukraine. Those expecting war violence were disappointed. The composition was an affectionate speech to the composer's homeland. You felt pain and sorrow in his music. It was hushed and sometimes with sardonic humour. And the latter is certainly wasted on Ukrainian soprano Viktoriia Vitrenko. She is a specialist in this kind of work. This could also be heard at the Kurtág Festival at the Muziekgebouw aan het IJ in March 2023. With her expressive voice, she kept the audience enthralled until the end, even though most in the audience could not understand the Ukrainian language. Lunyov's music only got a little jazzy for a moment at the poem about a kamikaze mosquito (as an audience, we had been given the English translation). Viktoriia said Lunyov set 35 poems to music, 18 of which she had chosen. The last poems were about Christmas. As an encore, we got another Christmas song. The whole thing created love and connection. The singer was accompanied on the Bechstein by Ukrainian pianist Antonii Baryshevski, who fled to the Netherlands with his family in March 2022. And with that, we in the Netherlands (despite all the hardship) can consider ourselves lucky. Because he is a fantastic musician who provided a beautiful supporting accompaniment.
INTER A K T Initiative NEWS
SPORT und InterAKT gehen on Tour: NACH DEM SONNENSTURM
Theater | Musik | Partizipation
